Backstory

NULL is an NPC who could originally be found in Toolbox Speedway; it could be seen “walking” away from the road, but was later removed after the floor's revamp.

He was officially announced to be an elevator NPC in a tweet posted on September 10th, 2024, and a trailer for it was released on February 14th, 2025. He was released a day later after this announcement.

Appearance

NULL appears as a yellow-skinned Robloxian wearing a gray hoodie with black drawstrings, red innards, and a hood pulled down at the back of his head. He also wears gray pants with large pockets, with identical red insides. On his head, he wears a yellow hat/hood with a red chicken comb on it, large black button eyes, and a shiny orange beak on the bottom and top of the opening. The hat is a modified version of the Telamon's Chicken Hood hat. His head is half shaded black, with white glowing eyes visible. He also has no visible mouth.

Description

NULL is a “helperbot” operated by a hivemind and uses the pronoun “we” to refer to itself. He speaks eloquently and mysteriously, often confusing other NPCs. It often speaks of the "prime" and refers to ascension, and the Greek figure known as Icarus, which are all a part of his undisclosed plan. It is currently unknown what this plan is. He works alongside Folly and MR, though he often quarrels with the former. Likely due to his nature as a robot created to serve, NULL is deeply focused on fully using his potential; as such, he judges and dislikes other characters who he deems as not using their potential fully or those who stay stagnant.

NULL has abilities that allow it to use tools that Roblox Studio users can usually use (similarly to WilliamPlayz57) and can use it to create balloons, as well as select and move objects with the move tool. According to NULL, he can also anchor objects. He also implies he can remove tools from player backpacks. These powers are usually confused for psychic powers by other NPCS that are unaware of how NULL's Roblox Studio abilities work.

Interactions

NULL spawns in through the On The Heights floor, surrounded by a blue selection outline that quickly disappears. It then will walk into the elevator. NULL will exit the elevator on the Ballpit, Funny Maze, Cardboard Mansion, Shop Space, Infected Apartment, Floppy Shoppy, and Underground Subway floors.

If the elevator is full, NULL will instead retreat, select themselves again, and then disappear.

Occasionally, NULL will spawn in a balloon. When popped with an item like the Anti Voomba Mechanism, or simply the player's head, the balloon pops and gives players near them a random effect:

Occasionally, NULL will also spawn a random object instead of a balloon.

It is possible for NULL to spawn more than one of spingebill, the mascot, or Gleco, however there can be no more than three spawned at once.

NULL will accept the Cheezburger, Fizz Up!, Cheese, Medkit, Fizz Jug, Jerm Pop, Red Block!, Infinite Ice Cream, Dance Potion, Chocolate Milk, Gas Mask, and Cake Slice. It will not accept Magic Mirror, Wet Cement, Kitty, or the Cooler.

Trivia

  • Most of NULL's idle dialogues describe other NPCs.
  • NULL's Prometheus quote is taken directly from Portal 2, where the Oracle Turret recounts the legend. The quote itself is different from the actual quote mostly because it has been changed to reflect events that transpire in Portal 2, as opposed to the original myth.
    • In general, most of NULL's idle dialogue was inspired by the Oracle Turret's way of speaking.[2]
  • NULL's stop-motion movement likely references the way old Roblox animations (from early 2010s) worked, in which the limb movements were affected by "throttling", causing it to look like stop-motion animation.
  • NULL was originally able to be killed by MR, however this was a bug and has since been fixed.
  • NULL is one out of three NPCs to have all or most of their name in capitals, the other two are DrRETRO and STAT.
  • Despite referring to itself with plural pronouns, some NPC dialogue shows them using singular pronouns such as "I" and "me".
    • While this could be an oversight, it is worth noting that it only uses "I" when referring to its "prime" and that it deserves to "gain individuality".

  • NULL has been described as a "weird ai demon" by Yeucc.[3]
  • According to an interaction between Melanie and Pest: NULL is working for MR and has "weird capabilities".
    • The latter may refer to his builder tool-like abilities.
  • NULL is aroace.[4]
  • NULL doesn't have an age.[5]
    • Despite this, NULL's birthday is January 1st.[6]
  • NULL may be into cards as before he was removed as he looked like he was "walking" from the road to people playing a card game.
  • NULL is a "Helperbot", as entering the code from the Toolbox Speedway into Youtube shows NULL being shown off with the quality being terrible.
    • If you enter in the link in the description, it redirects you to a game on Roblox called "my helperbot models" by "Gleco". Currently, the game is down and no longer available to play. Luckily the game has been saved and can be played here.
      • If you go into the code of the game you can find this message: "i don’t know who is gonna be reading this but i dont cre anymore im really angry if your looking for my helperbot models you arent gonna find them here anymore because i deleted everything that had it you idiots took advantage of my hard work and acted like it was all yours if you are reading this and you are normal and just like my games the code i use in my places on the keypad door is 9800998 i want to make this a cool surprise when you finished the obby i was working on but i quit so screw it i hate roblox now goodbye forever".
      • Additionally, the description of the game reads "my door code is 9800998 goodbye forever".
      • Due to a recent ROBLOX update, the link to "my helperbot models" now leads to an error page.

  • According to a stream made by Yeucc, NULL has a mouth, but his lips are sealed shut, making it impossible to see.[7]
    • If NULL tried to eat fried chicken, he would only manage to rub it across its face.[8]
  • NULL has at least one DUI.[10]
  • If NULL was present during 9/11, it would likely spawn a third plane for fun.[11]
  • If NULL could play any instrument, it would be a CRTelecaster. [12]
  • NULL's voice seems to be the Microsoft David TTS mixed with other TTS voices.[13][14]
  • NULL is one poob tall.[15]
    • Poob is 5'9 inches or 175 centimetres tall. It can be assumed this means NULL is as well.
  • According to a stream made by Yeucc, NULL is not a robot.[16]
    • The exact meaning of this is unknown, as it has repeatedly been shown and stated, both in-game and in related media, that it is mechanical.
    • Potentially, this relates to helperbots as a whole having been created by a player and therefore not truly built.[17]
  • One of the talking sound effects has been used as the kill sound effects for Hojmer from You vs Homer
  • If NULL were to hit a bong, it would "tweak the fuck out".[18]
